Complicit-Complacent confronts the disillusionment of our time, highlighting the ecological and existential nightmare that our society is responsible for. A nightmare perpetuated by the myth of progress. Our time is characterized by deferred expectations and anxieties, with tabloids providing the sustained narrative which later becomes history. Our world is exploited beyond use, reduced to a bottom line marked by a mass extinction, product fetishism, diminishing resources, and patented seeds. The relationship between capital and labor has grown increasingly estranged, resulting in falling living standards as deindustrialization and outsourcing take place. The boundaries between life, art, and TV have become increasingly obscured, and our hyper-accelerated society raises questions about the poverty of experience. In the space of post-history, all grand narratives dissipate as technological dependency diminishes the tangibility of our experiences. Our collective consciousness has been reduced to a scattered daze, as the state of the spectacle empties and nullifies every real identity. The media offers semiotically encoded avenues for ideology and identity construction, and there is no reality outside representation. Truth is lost amongst arbitrary and insignificant objectives, semiotically spun as we sit back sedated in front of the flickering screen captivated by the false promises it proposes for the future it truncates. We stand before a precarious future, where the vices of the first world perpetually become the burden of the third. The social landscape has become increasingly fractured and alienated, and the medium has swallowed the message. Body of work speaks not to our ignorance of ecological collapse, but something more disturbing: knowledge already domesticated — stripped of its traumatic force and repackaged as content, made safe for consumption. Ideology operates here at its most efficient, not by falsifying reality but by ensuring that even accurate knowledge of a burning planet, of daily extinction, leaves no remainder, produces no rupture. To change the channel is not indifference; it is a conditioned reflex within a system that requires our ongoing complicity — and complacency, therefore, is not a moral failure of individuals but a structural achievement, produced by the very apparatus through which we encounter the real. What the work stages is a contradiction not between reality and representation, but within reality itself: mass extinction is not proof of a civilization failing, but, in the most uncomfortable sense, proof of one succeeding. No resolution is offered. Good — resolution would be the final betrayal, the aesthetic closure that allows catastrophe to be processed, mourned, and safely set aside. Instead the contradiction is held open, kept unbearably alive.
