Artist, designer, filmmaker and photographer Sam Heydt has lived and worked in Paris, Venice, Vilnius, Athens, Sydney, Vienna and NYC.  She completed her studies at Parsons School of Design, Universidad de Buenos Aires, La Sorbonne and the Universiteit van Amsterdam, and has attended artist residencies in Iceland, Australia and New Zealand.  She has undertaken a range of nonprofit work for developing countries. As a fine art photographer, she has exhibited in a constellation of galleries & museums throughout the world and is in the permanent collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.  Heydt’s work speaks to the disenchantment of the social psyche at the hands of the media and the desolation of the natural world.

[artist statement]

Illusion does not free us from reality.

Ironically employing the very medium she critiques, Heydt’s large and varied body of photographic work speaks to the disenchantment of the social psyche at the hands of the media apparatus and at the expense of the natural world.  United by its unconventional exploration of semiology and its role in cementing corporal commodification, consumerism and constructed narratives of the past, her work splinters into several subversive series. From empty motel rooms to opencast mines, Heydt’s visions transcend her images’ site-specific locations — the impact of the photographs are shockingly universal, rendering the global local.
